Christmas Catering in London: A Q&A with Caiger & Co
Meet the founder behind our Christmas catering
At Caiger & Co, Christmas catering starts at home. Our founder, Alix, grew up in a family of big cooks, where Christmas meant pizza-oven turkeys, homemade game pies and a brandy butter that never quite behaves.
Those kitchen-table traditions shape every festive menu we create, from glamorous Christmas parties to intimate private dinners across London.
So we sat Alix down with a mince pie and asked her about the moments that make Christmas for her.
Christmas memories: yule logs, cake and a dog's advent calendar
Christmas: love it or tolerate it?
Love it, and I love it even more now I have kids. You get to see it all through their eyes again. The build-up, the traditions, the food. It's a different kind of magic.
What's the most unusual tradition in your house?
We once bought the dog a Christmas advent calendar. The kids loved handing out the treat every morning. I'm not sure who looked forward to it more, them or the dog.
What did Christmas look like when you were growing up?
We always had a Yule log. It wasn't Christmas without one. And decorating the Christmas cake on Christmas Eve was such a treat. It's one of those jobs that feels like the official start of Christmas.
Which Christmas tradition would you never give up?
Cooking together. Our family are big cooks, and Christmas is when everyone gets involved. The kitchen is always the busiest room in the house.
The festive food: pizza-oven turkey, game pie and brandy butter
What's the most memorable Christmas dinner you've had?
The year Dad roasted the turkey in the pizza oven he'd built himself. Nobody in our family batted an eyelid. That tells you everything about how seriously we take Christmas food.
Boxing Day: rest day or round two?
Round two, always. Boxing Day is all about the leftovers. My dad and uncles make a game pie and a terrine, and they're as much a part of Christmas as the turkey.
Who's the pudding star of the family?
Mum, without question. Her puddings are incredible. Everyone saves room, even after the biggest lunch.
And the family's biggest Christmas mystery?
My sister splits the brandy butter. Every year. No one knows how she does it, and at this point it's become a tradition of its own.
From family table to festive catering
How does your family Christmas shape Caiger & Co's festive menus?
It's where it all comes from. I grew up around people who cook with real care and a bit of theatre. That's what we want our Christmas catering to feel like: generous, delicious and something people remember.
What kind of Christmas events do you cater?
All sorts. A big, glamorous Christmas party where everyone dresses up and the food gets as much attention as the dance floor. A corporate Christmas party to thank your team. A celebration with clients. Or an intimate Christmas dinner around one long table.
What makes a great Christmas party menu?
Cocktails flowing, canapés that keep appearing, and food that feels festive without being heavy. People should be talking about the food the next day, not just the dancing.
If you could bring one family dish to a client's Christmas party, what would it be?
Boxing Day game pie, no question. Maybe not the split brandy butter.
